Introduction to Canyoneering

Course Description
This course provides students with the skills needed to become competent and safe Canyoneers. Training includes evaluation and proper use of a variety of anchors, safe and efficient rigging techniques and personal on-rope skills. This course was designed to specifically help the recreational Canyoneer.

Skills and topics covered:
-Canyon rating system and how to apply it
-Weather and topography
-Proper gear selection and care
-Canyoneering ethics
-Simple static and releasable riggings
-Personal on rope skills (hooking up, adding friction, locking off)

Gear Requirements
Harness, helmet, rappel device, safety tether, multiple locking carabiners required. Please wear sturdy shoes, nothing open toed, as we will be hiking amongst the red rocks. Ropes and other special equipment will be provided by the instructors.

Come prepared to get down and dirty! Please dress for the weather and bring lunch, water and snacks on final day.

Classroom portion held on first half of first day at:

Outside/hands-on training for remainder of workshop up Diamond Fork Canyon

Intro to Canyoneering Course

  • This course will take place both inside and ouside. The first half of the first day will be the "classroom portion" of the course and held at:
    Out N Back in Orem
    The hands on outside portion will be held  at Red Ledges up Diamond Fork Canyon
